What suppliers miss in Kentucky

Does Kentucky require a DME supplier license?

No one may provide home medical equipment and services in Kentucky without a license from the board, with a separate license for each location. The law reaches equipment funded by a third-party payor. Pharmacies, prescribers, hospitals and manufacturers that do not sell to patients are exempt.

  • DME or HME license
  • Home Medical Equipment and Services Provider License
  • Issued by Kentucky Board of Durable Medical Equipment Suppliers (Department of Professional Licensing)

Do out-of-state suppliers shipping into Kentucky need a license?

The rules set an inspection fee for inspections outside Kentucky, at the board's actual cost, and a reciprocal license exists for providers located in the seven bordering states. An out-of-state maker of highly specialized equipment not offered by a Kentucky licensee is exempt.

  • Covers out-of-state suppliers

Who must be on staff at a licensed Kentucky location?

Every employee working under the license needs at least six hours of training each year covering infection control, OSHA safety, HIPAA and any new equipment the licensee plans to provide.

Does Medicare accreditation count in Kentucky?

Proof of accreditation, or exemption, from a CMS-approved accrediting organization replaces the board's pre-license inspection. A licensee without accreditation is inspected every year, and one that loses accreditation must request an inspection.
